SAP is organizing its second annual UX event, HIVE. It’s a full day event where speakers with diverse industry perspectives present interesting UX topics around immersive technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality and internet of things.

We envision HIVE to grow into a forum for people to connect and be part of a community that thrives for better user experience and design by working together.

Opening Keynote

In addition to leading User Experience & Design (UxD) for SAP, Sam has taken over responsibilities as the Managing Director for SAP in Silicon Valley in July 2015. Sam keeps his role as the Chief Design Officer of SAP. He will continue to drive a renewed commitment to design and user experience at SAP. Under his leadership SAP further strengthens its mission of listening to customers' needs leading to tangible results, including SAP Fiori, SAP Screen Personas and SAP's UX design services.

Closing Keynote

Gesche Joost is Professor for Design Research at the Berlin University of the Arts and since 2005 heading the Design Research Lab. With international partners, she conducts research and development projects in the areas of human-computer-interaction, gender and diversity aspects in technological development, as well as user-centered design and participation. She is the chairwoman of DGTF e.V. [German Society for Design Theory and Research] and board member of Technologiestiftung Berlin. She is member of the board of the German National Adademic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes), appointed member of the Synod of the evangelical church in Germany (EKD) as well as full member of the Goethe Institute. In 2014, she was appointed as a Digital Champion for the EU commission. Since 2015, she is member of the Advisory Board of SAP SE.

Charlie Sutton is a Product Design Manager at Facebook working on VR and immersive experiences. For more than 15 years, Charlie has led teams creating new products and services, with a focus on interaction design for mobile devices. His career at Apple, Nokia and Samsung has covered a diverse range of experiences—from smartphones, laptops and tablets—to sensors, location platforms and augmented reality. Charlie is also passionate about design education, and is currently a Senior Lecturer at California College of the Arts.

Designing Virtual Reality for Pain Reduction

Brian is a Visiting Healthcare Specialist at frog and a plastic surgery resident at Stanford. While at frog, he has developed his interest in merging human centered design with novel applications of technology to improve healthcare delivery and patient care. His work at frog has included Fortune 500 companies and major academic institutions. Brian’s earlier research was in tissue engineering. Some of his current research interests include virtual reality for pain and anxiety relief for patients. He completed his BS in chemical engineering at North Carolina State University and his MD at Stanford University.

Prior to frog he worked for two award-winning design consultancies in New York City building immersive and gestural environments for leading museums and science centers throughout the United States.

Noelle LaCharite is a Solutions Architect and Evangelist for Amazon Alexa. She engages with Alexa developers, architects, hardware engineers and project managers to facilitate the integration of Alexa into their products and services. She has spent many years as a technical trainer and evangelist for IBM, a Solution Architect for RedHat and in Education Leadership at Pivotal and AWS. She has been an enterprise developer, architect and principle consultant over a decade. She has written a couple of books on IBM WebSphere as well as published a couple short books via KDP about cloud computing for SMB. She has spoken at JavaOne, RedHat Summit, AWS Summits and AWSome Days. As an Evangelist for Alexa she develops demonstrations, white papers and tutorials and speaks at many technical conferences and seminars.

Before coming to the SAP Palo Alto office in 2015 Christoph worked at SAP headquarters in Germany for 6 years.

Janaki Kumar is the VP and Head of Design and Co-Innovation Center at SAP Labs Palo Alto. She leads a team of design thinkers and design doers who co-innovate with customers on their strategic user experience and design projects. She is a thought leader in nurturing creative cultures in organizations, and building, coaching and inspiring award winning design teams. Janaki was named one of Silicon Valley’s 2016 Women of Influence by Silicon Valley Business Journal. She is the co-author of the book, Gamification at Work – Designing Engaging Business Software. She was a speaker at a TEDx conference in 2014. She is a co-instructor at Stanford’s Graduate Business School LEAD course on Customer Experience Design: A Neuroscience Perspective She has authored 20 intellectual property patent applications of innovative user experiences. Janaki has a Masters in Information Systems from Boston University, and was in the Executive Leadership Program at Stanford University.
